I used to think a vacation meant getting far, far away, but I’ve learned that the feeling of escape isn’t about the distance—it’s about the mindset. And guess what? You can create that feeling without ever leaving home. Let me share how I do it.
Set the Scene – Make Home Feel New
Here’s the thing: if my space looks exactly the same, my brain refuses to believe I’m on a break. So, I change things up. Sometimes that means a deep clean. Other times, I rearrange my room, light a candle, or throw on fairy lights. One time, I went full-on beach mode—ocean sounds, a smoothie in a fancy glass, and a blanket as a makeshift beach towel. It sounds ridiculous, but it totally worked.
Unplug – For Real This Time
I’m the worst at this. My phone is practically glued to my hand, and I tell myself just one more scroll before I finally put it down. But when I do? It’s like my brain takes a deep breath. So, for my staycations, I try my hardest not to answer emails, not doomscroll, and if I’m watching something, it is something I chose, not just whatever auto-played next. It’s shocking how much time opens up when I step away from the screen.
Plan Something Fun – Even if It’s Silly
A staycation only works if I actually do something different. I’ve tried painting (badly) while pretending I was at a fancy art retreat. One of my favourite staycations was when I made a blanket fort, ordered pizza, and had a movie marathon. It felt like being a kid again, and honestly? That’s exactly what I needed. The point is, doing something intentional makes the break feel real.
Eat Like You’re Travelling
You know how food just tastes better on vacation? I try to recreate that. I’ll cook something from a place I want to visit, or I’ll order takeout from somewhere new. Setting the table nicely makes a difference, too.
Get Outside – Or Bring the Outside In
Fresh air = instant mood boost. Even if it’s just a short walk to the corner store, it helps. But if the weather sucks, I improvise. Opening the windows, playing nature sounds, or even surrounding myself with houseplants helps me feel like I’ve escaped.
Give Yourself Permission to Actually Relax
This is the hardest part. I always feel like I should be doing something. But I remind myself: if I were on a real vacation, I wouldn’t be stressing about laundry or to-do lists. So, I let myself just be. No guilt, no productivity pressure—just time to reset.
