Safe Horizon Responds to Harvey Weinstein Conviction

We can’t say it loud enough. Believe. Survivors.

Today, a judge declared a mistrial after a jury was not able to reach consensus on the charge of third-degree rape against Harvey Weinstein. This follows one count of guilty for a felony sex crime and one count of not guilty for another count of the same charge delivered by the jury yesterday. While we are deeply disappointed about the mixed verdict, this trial still shows us the power of survivors speaking their truth. Harvey Weinstein was convicted of a serious felony sex crime in a court of law because survivors spoke up.

But to achieve this, survivors were forced to go through the trauma of testifying again, after the 2020 rape conviction against Harvey Weinstein was overturned last year. We cannot overstate how extremely difficult it can be to take the stand and tell your story in front of your abuser and a group of strangers. Imagine having to do it over and over again.

The traumatization of retelling your story and being subjected to demeaning questioning is another societal barrier that can prevent a survivor from seeking the justice they deserve.

Safe Horizon applauds Miriam Haley and Jessica Mann for their fierce and unwavering courage in speaking out against their abuser and for testifying yet again about their harrowing experiences. We are grateful to Kaja Sokola for adding her voice to this trial.

To all survivors—we stand with you and will not stop fighting for a world that supports your right to justice and healing. You are not alone.
